A stunning collaboration from Robert Vaughan and Kathy Fish, two masters of flash fiction, who’ve blended their work together in a vibrant explosion that is all of these things  evocative, heart wrenching, rare in the wild. The stories in RIFT explore the gamut of human connection and conflict, where emotions run deep beneath the surface. Divided into four sections Fault, Breach, Tremor, and Cataclysm, writers Fish and Vaughan thread together their tales of strange encounters, mishaps, accidents, and disrepair. The world of RIFT is riven, tumultuous, and haunting. In here, danger lurks and the fallible human heart lay exposed and vulnerable. Fish and Vaughan leave their readers spellbound, mystified, and eager for the next story.

This enjoyable collaboration between Robert Vaughan and Kathy Fish is sure to get your motor running. Sharply focused and carefully honed, each story is presented in an alternating style that is both complementary and unique. Some of the stories in Rift feel straightforward, light and amusing, while others are complex, brooding and deep. Because they are masters at their craft, Fish and Vaughan succeed wonderfully in drawing the reader into the raw, visceral undertow of their words. On several occasions I emerged from a story with lingering thoughts of the people I’ve known or the places I’ve been. This cornucopia of delightful short stories and flash fiction can be devoured quickly, but the real flavor of this book improves when savored slowly. Magical and entertaining, yet meaty enough to challenge any imagination, Rift does not disappoint!

Mythical, Mysterious and Magnetic. So much to take in.
This collaboration between Kathy Fish and Robert Vaughan is a literary treat - each short short story is artful and engaging.
This is a stunning collection, beautifully rendered by two masters of flash fiction. Every single piece made me gasp, "Wow!" I highly recommend this innovative collaboration.
Rift is fascinating, rocking, compelling fiction, in duet form. These short stories bare all, and the alchemy of Kathy Fish and Robert Vaughan, two authors I greatly admire, is a gift to their fans. I found myself immediately rereading many of the stories, finding more to them a second time around. And they build - as you'll see - in a logical and alarming way - right to the end.
"That was a whole vocabulary ago," Kathy Fish writes, in one of the standout pieces making up this amazing collection called Rift.

In a story called "Cosmos at Aspen" a character conjured by Robert Vaughan says to his heartbroken friend, "Aw, don't go there, man. Not now..."

Time and again, in Rift, the reader is made privy to these turning points, electric moments wherein reality is ripped a little, at some crossroad or other, and we rapt readers watch as these characters try to make sense of the "active fault lines" life keeps on dealing them.

As I read Rift, I thought "YES! Raymond Carver, on nitrous oxide. Carver with a better sense of humor!"

Other comparisons are invited

Robert Vaughan's voice is reminiscent of the stylist, Leonard Michaels. Fish also evokes overtones of Denis Johnson.

Fans of flash fiction have no excuse but to get this book. No excuse but read, and study on it.

I burned through my copy in about a day and a half, and was very sorry to let it go.

I'll pick it up again. I'll go back, to these "fault lines" of Fish and Vaughan-- where they left off, with me.

5 stars for this baby.

Easy.

The bass player has spoken.
I believe Vonnegut said it have something horrible happen right away. In the stories of Rift a rupture either will happen or has happened. In any case, Kathy Fish and Robert Vaughan don’t give you a lot of time to get too comfortable. That’s partly due to the nature of flash and partly due to the conceit of the book. Sometimes the event is only alluded to, leaving the text itself to play the part of a rift—the divide between that event and the reader’s imagination. The reader may leap over or fill in the gap, or simply enjoy the pleasure of the text. The form of the book also causes a certain slippage in the reader’s mind. Because the Fish and Vaughan stories alternate throughout and the styles are so similar, this reader found himself trying to guess who wrote what, sometimes having the peculiar thought that Vaughan had written a Fish story or vice versa. The indeterminacy of author is especially intriguing in light of the questions that fissure through the collection’s shortest story, If You Have to Have an Ism. The “Ism” in question here happens to be individualism. Fish and Vaughan seem to delight in keeping the reader slightly off balance. If you want to engage with these stories, you need to dance with them. Some more fanciful, others more slice-of-life, the odd or unexpected in terms of narrative, language or form always ensure these stories never fall into the mundane. But ultimately I think the indeterminacy of author gives this book the unique quality that will continue to speak to me in years to come.
