Take a town full of West Virginia coal miners, 17th century nobility, one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, d'Artagnan (without the three musketeers), Blaise Pascal, Rene Decartes, Galileo, Oliver Cromwell and Gustav II Adolph. Shake well and simmer for thirteen years.

Eric Flint's world of 1632 is an amazing and complex alternate history universe that split off from ours one spring day in 2000 and 1631.

The Grantville Singles provide readers with the opportunity to sample some of our favorite stories from the semi-monthly magazine devoted to the series, The Grantville Gazette. We hope you enjoy them.

In this story Rick Boatright's popular character Father Nick Smithson returns. While part of the action of the story is set, as usual for Fr. Nick, in the Library, there is rather more 'action' than librarians are used to.

Father Nick and his associates continue their work to keep Murphy's Imp directly in front of them lest a moment of inattention result in disaster.

Take one Catholic church, One Saint whose background fits slightly into the concept, add Murphy's Law and you wind up with Saint Philip of the Screwdriver, a Society of Believers who dissect breakdowns and failings and determine their causes and remedies...and thwart the Demon Murphy who makes certain that:
: if it is possible to install a part incorrectly, it will be,
: if you need a part, the local hardware store won't have it,
: the proper-sized screw has the wrong thread,
: your shoelaces break when you don't have a replacement and are late for a meeting, and,
: "Anything which can go wrong eventually will go wrong, and at the worst possible time".
The whole concept is hilarious and all too probable.

The Society of Saint Philip of the Screwdriver Gazette Singles Book 6 eBook Rick Boatright Paula Goodlett Reviews

I only wish to state that the story that came before would also be included. In order to be a more complete book.
A good example of Murphy's law cause. effect and repercusions and an excellent tribute to Christopher Stasheff.
Nice piece but a bit too granular. 1632 fans may wish to read to gain context for other pieces but not really compelling nor well written.
An entertaining look at technology and how it works in 1632. Especially the importance of preventative maintenance.
Good for someone who has not read all the Gazettes
Definitely a "short" story in the 1632 series, yet it harkens back to another delightful series by Christopher Stasheff, which added St. Vidicon to the "Litany of Unofficial Saints." [...]
I agree wholeheartedly that St. Phillip Neri (the Laughing Saint) is a more appropriate patron as he has been canonized; however, the spirit of cooperation and improvement the society evinces is appropriate. (Any yellow-handled screwdriver is a token although some prefer the cross-shape of the Phillips-head for symbolism.)
